All life demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life. The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today.

Who is Federico Marziali?

Some personal notes and messages. If bored, skip to next section, I won’t hold any grudges 😊

Born in Rome at the start of the 80’s, I studied and graduated as an aerospace engineer in this very city 25 years later, in one of the Italian University with the longest tradition in this field: La Sapienza, first University of Rome.

Aeronautics had been a passion for my family already for a couple of generations and the fascination for flying, its physics and the beautiful machines that allowed us to fulfil this long-standing human dream accompanied me since childhood, actually since I can remember.

In my early teens I developed another passion for highly-complex systems: computers and software.

Both domains fascinated me, and they still do, for how they can truly enlarge people’s horizons with the varied range of applications they offer.

I also see them as practical tools to respond to two fundamental traits of human beings: communication and exploration.

Their multidisciplinary nature and complexity, both intrinsic and in their applications, and the fact that they can be used to build other systems, architectures and infrastructure, like in a game of Chinese boxes, has a particular appeal for me: like an infinite playground of countless possibilities, there is always a way of learning and inventing something new!

Having being online before most people in my home country started writing books (!) about “what Internet was” I was in contact with people from abroad early on. Probably because of this and because I was growing up in the last phase of the European integration tha would lead later to the EU and the Euro, I develop a genuine curiosity for other cultures and points of view that can enrich my own perspective on the World. It came for me as a natural development to move outside Italy at the beginning of my career, first in UK, then in Germany, where I have been now for almost 15 years. But my curiosity for other nations hasn’t stopped: I had the fortune to be involved in many international projects in Europe, North America and China.

My natural propension for a holistic, systemic approach to engineer development, leaning towards standardisation and re-use of the solutions under improved conditions, shifted the focus of my career form a deep vertical technical role to a more horizontal, multidisciplinary role with management focus on operations.

Since then I have been taking on roles leading changes and teams in heterogeneous environments for complex business projects: what most people see as potential headaches, I see as an opportunity and what makes the job really interesting!

Now, I am not claiming to be even remotely near to a genius like Dr. Juran or any other of the really exceptional people that defined, deployed and evolved operational excellence (if that was the case you would be reading this on Wikipedia, instead of the FMP website 😊).
Nonetheless, I was able to help various companies successfully execute complex organisational changes thanks to

  1. a holistic approach to matters,
  2. focussing  on people as the core of the solution and success (and often establishing the communication between management  and workforce as part of my assignments),
  3.  always thinking about the contingent project within the bigger picture,
  4. having in mind the pragmatic aspects that really drive customer value,
  5. use the system-process approach with a great focus on the “left parts” of the processes, metrics, optimization and practicality.

If you have a challenge that is complex, affects the company at multiple levels or does not seem to fit in any box of consultancy, it is time to get in touch with us!

So why FMP as a name?

Early on I conceived and lived consulting in a way that is different than how most consulting firms usually do – at least so I am told by my clients. Perhaps because I was coming from operative roles in the business, instead of having followed the more typical career path of a consultant, I engaged with the organisations that I supported much tighter than what is usual for external consultants: rolling up the sleeves and going into the trenches with the client came quite natural to me.

The resonance found immediately within the clients and the many positive feedbacks at the end of the projects, which can be summarised in the semi-standard exclamation “we have never worked in this way with a consultant before!” convinced me that there was a real added value in pursuing such an approach.

For this reason, the first two letters “FM” are my initials: they reflect that when working for you and your company the people of FMP (be myself or one of the selected consultants with whom I work together) share the same interpretation of what consultancy really should be: listening, understanding and providing expertise while actually getting involved.

The “P” in the name stands for Project, to reflect what is perhaps a basic concept, but which has a central role in the daily-life of the consulting world: we initially engage because you have a need to start, to develop and/or to finish something at your end and wish to have the immediate support of an expert: it might very well be that in the end we will stay partners for a longer time.

The “P” in the name stands also for Performance. You expect our consultancy work to be effective and efficient. We appreciate and respect that the time and resources that you put forward when working with us are valuable for you and we will honour this by delivering solid results for you and your team in a transparent and measurable way.

Finally, the “P” in the name stands for the most central point of our consulting philosophy: Partnership. FMP lives an open and cooperative approach to consulting.
OPEN: We listen to your business (its processes and the systems) and to your people with equal attention, providing expert insights but adapting our approach to your very situation. We don’t pretend to have the answer and the best practice available for every situation before actually understanding what is going on. Each organisation is unique and deserves to be actively recognised as such.
COOPERATIVE: By Integrating with your team, we will facilitate internal communication and clarity of vision. Together we will define the goals and the way to reach them, and will lead your team there, meanwhile enhancing your organisation, so that the success is sustainable and you have grown in resilience to look forward to the next challenge with more confidence.

How do you work together with your clients?

FMP frames its assignments and projects within the larger context of the organisation for which it operates.

In our opinion, consultancy really makes a difference, if it is able to realise a sustainable return of investment in the long-run. And the easier way to achieve this is for the consultants not only to produce a concept that is understood, wanted and shared by all actors of the organisation, but by being directly involved in its implementation, acting both as external reference and as team participants.
This way your success become our success, your setbacks are also ours: an active role in your team ensures the highest possible commitment to your organisation.
In fact, it is part of our commitment to you to ensure not only the planning of a strategy, its agility of execution and obviously the reaching of the project’s goals, but also to allow your staff to grow in the process.

It is fair to state that this kind of engagement requires a certain attitude also at the client side. There must be a certain amount of willingness to change things for the better. Uneasy truths will be spoken out; problems will be on the table to be understood and solved; commitment will be sought beyond the easy-fixes for the contingent project.  One is not always in his/her own comfort zone.

On the other hand, this guarantees a real and robust growth for your team and for the organisation, with the setup of structures that will enhance business transparency and resilience.

FMP will help you tackle this challenge thanks to a long experience managing mixed team in heterogenous environment.
